Patagonia

For years Patagonia has been keeping it simple when it comes to life.  Founded by experienced climber Yvon Chouinard in the early 1970’s, this Ventura, California based company humbly began as an outdoors store that specialized in climbing equipment and tools, not apparel.

Yvon Chouinard is a rock climber, an active environmentalist and an outdoor industry businessman. He is most renowned for his contributions to climbing through the development of climbing equipment and the outdoor gear business.

Chouinard is considered one of the most successful businessmen in the outdoor industry alive today. Taking a rather basic approach to how he runs his business and lives his life, Yvon Chouinard is not considered your typical “suit & tie” businessman.   He has built his company on the simplistic ideals that he holds himself. The conclusion being that if he had to be a businessman, then he would build Patagonia on his own terms.

In addition to his love for climbing, Chouinard is also a surfer, kayaker, falconer and accomplished fly fisherman. Aspects of his love for the wild can be seen reflected throughout Patagonia, which is known for it’s heavy focus on the environment.

In fact, it is that very overwhelming love and faith in nature that keeps Patagonia, as a company, firmly “rooted” to its main mission…

That mission is the fight to save the planet by assuming responsibility for it’s very own actions as a company, then by taking measures to help reverse the negative effect placed on the environment that Patagonia and it’s supporters love so much.  Patagonia continues to take action to reduce, reuse, and renew resources by utilizing only recycled polyesters and organic cottons in the production of its garments.
