5 Minutes on the Sales Floor

While there are many people who work behind the scenes here at Glik’s, doing everything from tagging to accounting to buying, the main faces of the company are those smiling at you when you walk in the door.  I’m talking about our sales associates in our stores across the Midwest, and they are very important people.  After all, we wouldn’t have a clothing store company if we didn’t have anyone to sell the clothes.

Since customers are our top priority here at Glik’s, having great customer service skills is a must.  A good sales associate must always have a smile on his or her face and be willing to help any customer in need.  This could be anything from unlocking a fitting room door to finding a different size/color/style, and, of course, to telling a customer if they truly look good in the outfit they plan on buying for their big date, cousin’s wedding, graduation, etc.  Oh yeah, and while smiling, all the time, did I mention that?

To get the inside scoop on what working on the floor is really like I interviewed Julie Jones.  Julie began working with Glik’s her freshman year of college 12 years ago in the St. Clair store as a sales associate, then moved to the Highland store, and is now manager of our Granite City store.

Q: What is your favorite part about working on the sales floor at Glik’s?

Julie: I love all the people that I work with.  I love helping customers find hot fashion items.  There’s never a dull moment, no day is ever the same.

What are the good qualities a sales associate must have?

Well, number one is smile, smile, smile.  Smiling is key and all associates must maintain a good attitude.

Sales associates also need to have a good personality and cannot be timid.  They need to be outgoing.

General knowledge of product is also a must.

And the sales just start flowing.

What are the “hot items” we continually sell the most of?

For summer, we sell a lot of bright colors, flowy tops, and summer dresses.  We also sell a lot of both bermudas and short shorts as far as jean shorts go.  In shoes, we sell a lot of both gladiator style sandals as well as flip flops.

In Men’s, boardshorts, cargo shorts and plaid shorts are popular as well as Hurley, Billabong, and Fox tees.  Leather sandals sell more than the rubber flip flops, but Memorial Day weekend brought in a lot of guys looking for rubber sandals for float trips.

The two for $10 sunglasses we have also sell extremely fast.

What brands do customers here tend to lean towards?

In Women’s we sell a lot of Miss Me and Silver Jeans, but tops aren’t brand driven and whatever is hot and new sells the most.  Machine Jeans are popular because, as far as jeans go, the more destruction the better.

In Men’s, Hurley and Levi’s are two of the most popular brands.

What is your favorite brand or style?

My favorite brands are definitely Silver Jeans, Fox, Everly, Teenbell, and Roxy.

What time of year is the busiest/most hectic?

The Holidays are definitely the most hectic, but, ever since we started selling uniforms here at Granite City, Back to School can get pretty crazy.

What is our main customer base?

I see a lot of the surf/skate boys come in, but not very many older men.  And a lot of girls in their twenties and thirties come in to find the hottest fashion outfits to go out that night.
